Country Music For People Who Hate Country Music, Part 7/10: The Wistful Love Songs Are Back

This one is a day late, sorry lads. We had a couple of short, quick power outages on Sunday night that managed to fry my motherboard…where the fully edited version of this piece is saved. Oops. That’s what I get for using a cheap surge protector. Thankfully she’s still under warranty, so I was able to get my tower fixed today once the weather became less of a hazard to the IT guy. It’s kind of a short section today, so I hope the wait doesn’t make it too anticlimactic.

.

SO! Back to the playlist!

.

I mentioned the wistful love songs earlier. They’re a staple of the genre. One of the big complaints about modern country for a while was the lack of sad love songs. None of these are fully that, but none are unambiguously happy either, reaching for bittersweet more often than overtly saccharine.

.

Easy Silence by The Chicks

This is easily my favorite love song of all time. The title alone says it all, really. Romantic or not, when you find someone you can share a comfortable silence with without having to fill the air with anything at all, you know that love is a strong one.

.

Strawberry Wine by Deana Carter

A song about first love, now a long ago memory. A song about drifting apart, as can happen. A song about a relationship reaching a natural close, through no fault of anyone’s really. This one sometimes makes me stare dramatically into the middle distance. It really hits home with a very specific, bittersweet emotion.

.

Just To See You Smile by Tim McGraw

90s Tunes Again. I can never quite put to words what that sound is, but it is distinctive, and it dates some songs very clearly. A song about letting someone go gracefully.

.

NEXT TIME: The Songs A Lot of People Yelled About, where we get into some controversy. EDIT: Nope! I Skipped a section! Last time I said it was going to be Ghost Story Time and then accidentally skipped it, so that will be the next post instead. Controversy after that!
